Why Your Google Ads Campaign Is Not Generating Leads
Clicks but no leads? It's usually one of a handful of fixable problems. Work through this checklist to find where your Google Ads campaign is breaking down.

You're paying for clicks, but the leads aren't coming. It's frustrating, and it's common. The good news is that the cause is usually one of a few fixable problems. Work through this checklist in order, because the first issues affect everything after them.
1. Your conversion tracking is broken or missing
Start here. If Google Ads can't see conversions, Smart Bidding can't optimise and you can't tell what's working. Check that each conversion action fires once per real lead, that forms, calls and bookings are all tracked, and that test leads show up. Google Tag Manager and GA4 should agree with what's happening in your inbox or CRM.
2. You're showing for the wrong searches
Open the search terms report. You may find your ads appearing for job searches, DIY queries, competitor names or unrelated services. Add negative keywords and tighten match types. This alone often transforms performance.
3. Your location settings are too broad
Google's default location option can show ads to people "interested in" your area, not just people located there. For local businesses, switch to presence-based targeting and check the locations report for wasted spend.
4. Your bidding strategy doesn't match your data
Strategies like Target CPA need enough conversion data to work well. A brand-new account with few conversions may do better starting with Maximise Clicks or Maximise Conversions with careful monitoring, then moving to target-based bidding once there's enough data.
5. Your budget is spread too thin
Too many campaigns and keywords on a small budget means none get enough data to learn. Concentrate on your highest-intent services and locations first.
6. Your ads don't stand out
Generic ad copy blends in. Include your key benefit, an offer, proof points and a clear call to action. Use sitelinks, callouts, call assets and location assets to take up more space and give more reasons to click.
7. Your landing page isn't converting
If you're getting relevant clicks but no leads, the page is a prime suspect. Common problems:
- Sending traffic to the homepage instead of a dedicated page
- Headline doesn't match the search or ad
- Slow loading, especially on mobile
- Long or confusing forms
- No trust signals or clear reason to act now
- Phone number not clickable on mobile

8. Performance Max is spending in the wrong places
PMax can work well, but without guardrails it may spend heavily on display placements or branded searches you'd have won anyway. Review insights, add brand exclusions and account-level negatives, and make sure it optimises toward real lead conversions.
9. Leads are coming, but not being followed up
Sometimes the campaign works and the problem is downstream. Leads that wait hours for a response often go cold. Check how quickly your team responds and whether missed calls are returned. Automated follow-up through GoHighLevel can close this gap.
